You can earn this achievement by mining blocks of dirt.

Dirt from all mines count towards your Excavator achievement.

Bronze	Mine 100 blocks of dirt.
Silver	Mine 1,000 blocks of dirt.
Gold	Mine 10,000 blocks of dirt.
Expert	Mine 100,000 blocks of dirt.

This will probably be the first achievement you get. Congratulations! If you keep it up, you'll hit Expert level in no time.

Although it doesn't matter for the achievement, try mining dirt in different mines. You may find different items in each mine to help you in other ways on your journey.

Earning this achievement will happen naturally during the progression of the game, since mining is involved in most game elements. However, if you want to target this achievement specifically, there are a few ways you can speed up your progress. Mining horizontally mines two blocks at once, so you'll progress towards this achievement twice as fast. Another way to speed up your progress is to collect berries in the forest and take them to Pappy's Moonshine to make Berry moonshine, which speeds up your pickaxe speed. Thirdly, make sure you're using an upgraded pickaxe.
